AC/DC Announces Drummer Colin Burgess Dies at 77

Colin Burgess, the founding percussionist of AC/DC, has died at the age of 77.

Late Friday night, the heavy metal rock ensemble announced the news via social media.

“Very sad to hear of the passing of Colin Burgess,” the post began.

“He was our first drummer and a very respected musician. Happy memories, rock in peace Colin.”

The cause of death has not been disclosed as of yet.

TMZ reports that Burgess, bassist Larry Van Kriedt, vocalist Dave Evans, and sibling guitarists Angus and Malcolm Young, all joined the band in 1973.

Burgess denied the allegation that he was inebriated on stage and was consequently dismissed from the band the following year. Burgess maintained that his drink had been tainted.

He was succeeded by Phil Rudd as drummer in 1975, but Page Six reported that Rudd temporarily resumed the position after breaking his wrist.

The departure of Burgess evoked sorrow among his admirers.

“Very sad news , as I love rock music especially from Australia, and he was a part of a generation of great musicians that kicked off the music industry in Australia, condolences to his family and friends,” one fan wrote.

Another added, “May he soar high, fly free and Rock on!”

AC/DC went on to have massive hits including “Back In Black,” “Highway to Hell” and “You Shook Me All Night Long.”

Since their début, the group has amassed more than two hundred million copies of albums.

In 2003, Cleveland, Ohio, hosted the rock and roll hall of fame induction ceremony for the group.

“Since 1975, the Australian band have churned out album after album full of scorched-earth, metallic hard rock which has rarely deviated from a template of headbanging-inducing guitar riffs, flashy drums and banshee-yell vocals,” the introduction noted.

Daily Mail of the United Kingdom reports that the band continues to perform with only one original member: Angus Young, who replaced Burgess Rudd, bassist Cliff Williams, vocalist Brian Johnson, and rhythm guitarist Stevie Young, who is also Young’s nephew.
