Representative Lauren Boebert, R-Colorado, has sponsored legislation designed to shut down a new board for the Department of Homeland Security, which controls misinformation. However, that’s not all that’s coming for this ill-fated board reminiscent of the film “1984” based on George Orwewll’s 1949 novel by the same name as the film. In it, the Ministry of Truth’s purpose was to rewrite history to change the facts to fit Party doctrine for propaganda effect.

A bill introduced by Boebert to abolish the Disinformation Governance Board would ensure that the federal government would not be able to define what is truth for the American people.
“This kind of stuff is terrifying. We in Congress have the power of the purse. It is our duty to shut down this department immediately,” Boebert told Fox News Digital Friday in an interview. “I’m calling on leadership in the Republican Party — Leader [Kevin] McCarthy, Whip [Steve] Scalise and others — to join me in calling for this department to be shut down and defunded.”
Representatives for McCarthy did not immediately respond to whether he backs this bill or efforts to impeach DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, which Boebert also wants. Scalise supports Boebert’s bill.
A recent letter signed by both Scalise and McCarthy questioned Mayorkas’ capability to hold office but did not specifically call for his impeachment.
DHS has announced the formation of a board dubbed the Disinformation Governance Board that is supposed to eliminate disinformation emanating from Russia and misinformation spread by human smugglers to get migrants to cross the US-Mexico border, reports the Associated Press. As the executive director of the board, Nina Jankowicz, who formerly served as a disinformation fellow at the Wilson Center, will lead the board.
The Republican Party – already wary of censorship as a result of Big Tech’s attempt to shut down the New York Post report on Washington Post reporter Hunter Biden’s laptop after Democrats labeled it disinformation – was outraged at the creation of the new agency, Fox News reported.
“No tax dollars should go to where Biden can use the power of the federal government to silence truthful stories like Big Tech did with the Hunter Biden story,” Boebert said.
Boebert compared the effort to government surveillance from George Orwell’s “1984” novel.
“Democrats took that [book] not as a warning, but as a guide,” she said.
In response to a Fox News White House correspondent’s question, White House press secretary Jen Psaki defended the Disinformation Governance Board and Jankowicz, saying that the effort continues the work of former President Donald Trump’s administration.
“We know there has been a range of [disinformation] out there about a range of topics, I mean, including COVID for example, and also elections and eligibility,” Psaki said.
Defending Jankowicz, Psaki argued that she was an expert on online disinformation and that she was an individual “with extensive qualifications.”
Hunter Biden’s laptop, which multiple media outlets have verified, is what Jankowicz called a “Russian influence operation” during the 2020 presidential election.
“This really is a department of propaganda,” Boebert said of the disinformation board. “To say that the federal department has a say in what’s right and what’s wrong. What’s truth and what is not. This is a very dangerous place that we’ve come to.”
Those who value free speech have expressed numerous concerns since Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced plans for a “Disinformation Governance Board” on Wednesday.
Ron DeSantis, Florida’s governor, said on Friday that he was prepared to move beyond words to actions.
“Clearly, our entire principles that the country was founded on — you cannot have a ‘Ministry of Truth’ in this country,” DeSantis said.
“Ministry of Truth” is a term many have used to describe the new disinformation board. The name comes from George Orwell’s famous dystopian novel “Nineteen Eighty-Four.”
This board amounts to an attack on free speech no matter how the Biden administration tries to spin it.
“Let’s get real here, let’s make sure that we’re doing things to benefit Floridians and Americans, but we’re not going to let Biden get away with this one,” DeSantis said. “So we will be fighting back.”
In a recent comment, the Biden administration suggested that this board was a benevolent force that everyone should accept, because that is exactly what a power-hungry government would like the public to believe.
“It sounds like the objective of the board is to prevent disinformation and misinformation from traveling around the country in a range of communities,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Thursday. “I’m not sure who opposes that effort.”

Psaki’s question can be answered by noting that anyone who recognizes the values of the United States should oppose that initiative.
The First Amendment of the Constitution guarantees freedom of speech and freedom of the press. This often includes false statements, and even a leftist outlet like The Atlantic said this was a good thing not too long ago.
The Biden administration may have a case if the board consisted of people who only wanted to stop the spread of completely false information. Although that argument probably wouldn’t stand up against the First Amendment, at the very least, it would be more rational.
