Biden Admin Has Sent $2.35 Billion to Taliban Since Disastrous Afghanistan Withdraw

A new report claims that the Biden administration has given more than $2.3 billion to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan since its chaotic withdrawal from the country two years ago.

A report released a week ago by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction discovered that money has continued to flow in since the American military departed Kabul, leaving behind 13 dead service members and billions of dollars in equipment.

In a report dated 30 July, SIGAR revealed that since late 2021, a substantial quantity of taxpayer funds had been given to the country.

Numerous aid organizations were allotted and disbursed the funds for the reconstruction of the country.

“The U.S. government has appropriated more than $2.35 billion in [fiscal year] 2022 and [fiscal year] 2023 funding for Afghanistan reconstruction programming since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021,” the report stated.

According to SIGAR’s report, not only has the country received billions, but additional funds are set to be allocated for additional initiatives.

Of six active reconstruction funds, the report found “about $1.70 billion remained for possible disbursement.”

“This amount includes $580 million obligated but unspent on 86 active projects, $557 million in funds available for obligation or subobligation on future projects, and $545 million obligated but unspent on inactive, suspended, or terminated contracts,” the report said.

It is widely believed that a significant portion of the funds intended for non-governmental organizations have been diverted by the Taliban.

John Sopko, the director of SIGAR, expressed concern to members of Congress in April about the Taliban’s use of American tax dollars.

In his report from last week, Sopko warned of the Taliban’s “diversion” of funds intended for aiding civilians.

Sopko wrote it is “no longer a question of whether the Taliban are diverting assistance from our programs to help the Afghan people, but rather how much they are diverting.”

The report found that money is being channeled into the country despite the existence of “gender apartheid” against the women of the country.

SIGAR warned the Taliban are not only oppressing women but are also accused of “crimes against humanity including corporal punishments and extrajudicial killings.”

The report was released a few weeks before the two-year anniversary of the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan as the Taliban overran the country, causing the collapse of the Afghan government.

Forbes reported that the Defense Department departed the country so quickly that $7 billion worth of U.S. military materiel was abandoned.

SIGAR reported that 147.06 billion U.S. taxpayer dollars have been spent in Afghanistan since 2002.
