Americans who are in Israel during the early stages of its conflict with Hamas have been told to find their own way to leave the area, even though most major airlines have canceled all flights to and from the country.
President Joe Biden asked American citizens in Israel on Monday, through the State Department, to think about using private planes or ground cars to leave because the conflict between Israel and the nearby Gaza Strip is getting worse. Still, some airlines decided to immediately stop all trips to Israel before the official announcement from the government. Because of this, American citizens might have had to negotiate with the Israeli government for a long time in order to make sure they could safely return to their home country.
“For American citizens who are currently in Israel, the State Department is providing consular assistance as well as updated security alerts. For those who desire to leave, commercial flights and ground options are still available,” Biden wrote. “Please also take sensible precautions in the days ahead and follow the guidance of local authorities.”
A sudden attack by Hamas on Israel killed hundreds of people at a music event and took hundreds more hostage. In the days since, at least 11 Americans have died. Israel’s Air Force drops bombs on whole city blocks, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his defense minister have launched a full attack on Gaza, cutting off the small area from water and power. The measures are meant to make sure that the Hamas command centers, which Iran backed, shut down.
Some airlines, like American, United, Delta, and international ones like Air France, Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Swiss, and Brussels Airlines, have said they will either temporarily or permanently stop flying.
When the Daily Caller asked for comment, a White House National Security Council official pointed to general instructions from the US Embassy in Israel about keeping an eye out for new flights coming into Ben Gurion International Airport.
Some people say that the Biden administration should have seen this coming and is still having trouble dealing with the fallout from the crisis it caused. One big problem is how it treated American citizens who were stuck in Israel. It turned out that some of the money the White House sent to Iran in exchange for American prisoners paid for Hamas’s attack on Israel. Politicians were even less happy with President Biden after he held a BBQ for White House workers. Many Republicans, including Tucker Carlson, think that the president wants to start a second war that will never end, even though he says he only wants to help Israel.
