Dem Staffer Reveals Congress’ Well-Kept Secret Plaguing Nadler

Published on

The Democratic Party is filled with individuals who are so old that they have little in common with the people they control stoutly. With an update from a particularly troubling sequence of events that occurred last year, Elizabeth Stauffer authored a fantastic article that brought attention to the Democrats’ issue with an aging political party.

Democrat and longstanding New York Representative Jerry Nadler, 75, is not the oldest member of Congress, but he is unquestionably beyond his prime.

According to a Democratic worker, Nadler, the powerful House Judiciary Committee’s chairman, has acquired the moniker “Rock-A-Bye Baby” from his colleagues.

It seems to be a well-kept secret that the combative lawmaker frequently nods off during sessions.

The assistant, who took part in the planning session, cited a Zoom meeting of the chairs of the House Democratic committees earlier in the year to claim that Nadler slept off. He wasn’t awakened; the conversation just went on without him.

“It’s just a known thing,” the staff member remarked.

According to The Post, Democrats and Republicans alike have expressed alarm that Nadler “has slowed down considerably.”

“Staff regularly have to wake him up during hearings,”, according to Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, an outspoken Republican member of the Judiciary Committee, according to the Post.

“I don’t think it’s like Dianne Feinstein,” referring to the 89-year-old Democratic senator from California, whose cognitive decline is well-known, according to the report.

Rep. Adam Schiff, the chair of the House Intelligence Committee, was chosen by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to preside over the first hearings to consider Trump’s impeachment in 2019, according to two “House insiders” who spoke to The Washington Post.

The staffer claimed that during the December 2019 discussion of the articles of impeachment by his committee, Nadler slept off.

“During [Louisiana Republican] Rep. Mike Johnson’s time to speak, Nadler fell asleep on live TV in front of millions of viewers. I was in the room when it happened, and it took everything for us to hold back the laughter,” according to a GOP staff member who was present, who told the Washington Post.

The assistant said,“He’s also known for taking prolonged breaks when hearings go particularly late into the night, giving the gavel to another member to chair while he’s away — we have no idea where he goes.”

I “I’m not trying to be mean, but he really is kind of out of it. The general talk is that California Rep. Zoe Lofgren is next in line and we don’t want someone that savvy in charge because she is definitely not out of it. … With Nadler there is a pattern where it’s really not clear what his mental state is. I’ll just be honest,” another GOP aide who is “connected to the committee” told the Post.

“Like 2 p.m. or following lunch — Jerry [will] be at low power and you can count on looking there and seeing him asleep,” according to a source the Washington Post referred to as a “committee insider.”

During a press appearance with then-New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2019, Nadler almost passed out. He was taken right away to the hospital. According to media sources, the congressmen were dehydrated.

Nadler’s latest primary debate against longtime House Democrat Carolyn Maloney, whom he defeated, was described as a “stumble.” His claim that he “impeached Bush twice” during a primary debate on August 2 quickly went popular on social media.

After his wife’s pancreatic cancer diagnosis in January 2020, a Democratic colleague told the Post that  “There’s been a noticeable shift since his wife is ill.”

The fact that Nadler is still in charge of his duties raises serious concerns.

And when you think about how many elderly people are currently in power, it’s very alarming.

In November, Vice President Joe Biden will turn 80. He is obviously no longer qualified to serve as president since his problems go much beyond basic age. Feinstein should also have resigned years ago.

But in addition to Biden and Feinstein, who both exhibit clear signs of cognitive struggle, there are many lawmakers in powerful positions who should have bowed out long before now.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is 82. Democratic Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland, the majority leader, is 83, and the majority whip, Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina, is 82.

The oldest Democratic representatives include Eddie Bernice Johnson of Texas, 86; Bill Pascrell of New Jersey, 85; Grace Napolitano of California, 85; and Maxine Waters, also of California, now 84.

The following clip of Waters at the June Summit of the Americas conference made the rounds on social media at the time. It may have been Pelosi’s news conference, but it was Waters who stole the show.

She stared straight into the camera, expressionless. She appeared to be totally disengaged from what the speaker was saying. Maybe she was simply exhausted. What octagenarian wouldn’t be tired after attending a large political conference that required a trip across the country?

Whatever the reason, it doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in our congressional leadership.

The oldest Republican serving in the House is Hal Rogers of Kentucky, age 84.

Among Senate Republicans, the oldest members are Chuck Grassley of Iowa, 88, Richard Shelby of Alabama, 88, and Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, 87. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky is 80.

All of these leaders are well past their primes and can’t possibly perform at the level they once did.

The ability of these octogenarians to serve the country effectively is a legitimate question.

Should there be a maximum age limit for members of Congress?

If so, Jerry Nadler can be Exhibit A.
