Former President Donald Trump is putting his presidential library on pause because he doesn’t want to signal his political career is over before a potential 2024 White House run.
Bloomberg News reported on the development Monday, citing people familiar with the ex-president’s thinking.
‘Once he says, “I am going to be raising money for my library,” he’s given up even the pretense of trying to run again,’ Anthony Clark, who has written about the politics surrounding presidential libraries, told Bloomberg.
Technically a Trump library exists as part of the 15-library Presidential Library System under the National Archives and Records Administration, but in its current form, it consists of the Trump administration’s digital archive.
Clark also told Bloomberg he was doubtful Trump would ever have a true presidential library because they’re expensive to build and complicated to plan.
President Barack Obama has been out of office since 2017 and yet his Obama Presidential Center in Chicago will only start construction later this year.
