Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, revealed a secret about Tucker Carlson’s comeback video that makes its success even sweeter.
The video, which was posted to Carlson’s Twitter account on Wednesday, attracted a larger audience than all of Fox News’ prime-time programs combined on that day, and according to Musk, Twitter did nothing to advertise its reach.
“To be clear, we did nothing special whatsoever,” Musk said about the video’s virality during a recent appearance on “Real Time with Bill Maher.”
Musk, whom Maher referred to as the “mayor” of Twitter, apparently was unaware of the video until after it went viral.
“It’s just that Twitter has a lot of people’s attention,” Musk said.
Carlson’s tweet, which had been submitted around 5 p.m. the night before, had garnered an astounding 40,500,000 views by Thursday evening.
On Saturday, the number of views had skyrocketed to an astonishing 77,6 million. The video had been viewed a total of 22.9 million times.
As Carlson’s dismissal from Fox News continues to dominate the news cycle, there may be no media more pertinent to the national dialogue than his response video, which was both optimistic about the future and astutely critical of the present.
Carlson, in his signature monologue style, criticized the current cable news circuit, presumably including his former employer, for its tendency to promote inconsequential conversations and soundbites.
Carlson indicated, without revealing specific plans, that his future endeavors may be aimed at restoring pertinent conversations to the forefront of American political discourse.
