The 59-year-old Little Rock, Arkansas, businessman was discovered dead approximately 30 miles from his home on May 7.

The Perry County, Arkansas, Sheriff’s Office told MEAWW that Middleton was discovered hanging from a tree with an extension cord wrapped around his neck and a gunshot wound to the chest. The family’s lawsuit, states he “died by suicide.”

Middleton served as former President Bill Clinton’s special assistant in the 1990s until his departure from the Clinton administration in February 1995.

The Los Angeles Times reported in 1996 that a White House investigation concluded that Middleton abused his access to the president to impress business clients a year after he left the White House.

Middleton is believed to have helped Clinton and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein strengthen their friendship, according to the U.S. Sun.
