It has ultimately occurred after much hand-wringing, consternation, and discussion.
On Thursday, former President Donald Trump surrendered to the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, producing one of the most anticipated mugshots in American history.

The startling photo was taken less than twenty-four hours after Trump missed the first 2024 Republican primary debate on Wednesday, citing his commanding lead in the polls.
The first of its kind, the mugshot of a former U.S. president is both shocking and historic.
Political analysts have noted that incumbent President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice is locking up his chief political rival — a scenario typically designated for full-blown banana republics and/or totalitarian regimes.
Trump could win the Republican nomination and then unseat Biden in the general election of November 2024. However, the former president has been registered and processed in Fulton County and has his own problems.
Trump surrendered to the Fulton County Jail in connection with the fourth indictment filed against the former president this year.
This indictment focuses on Trump’s alleged participation in the “criminal enterprise” that allegedly intended to overturn Georgia’s presidential election results in 2020. The state was won by Biden by fewer than 12,000 ballots.
13 of the 41 counts in the indictment against Trump and his 18 associates specifically target the former president.
This week, a number of the other designated defendants, including former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, Jenna Ellis, and Sidney Powell, turned themselves in and their mugshots were published.
