George Stephanopoulos Can’t Sugarcoat It: New Poll Numbers ‘Brutal for President Biden’

Former Clinton White House Communications Director and current anchor of ABC’s “This Week” George Stephanopoulos commented on the results of a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll on Sunday.

The abbreviated version: “This poll is just brutal for President Biden.”

Stephanopoulos introduced ABC News Political Director Rick Klein, who elaborated.

“The skepticism over his leadership extends deep inside his own party,” Klein said of President Joe Biden.

As evidence, Klein stated that only 36% of Democrats surveyed by the poll believed the incumbent should run for reelection. More than half of respondents preferred “someone else,” while only 6% were undecided.

“That’s despite the fact that the entire [Democratic National Committee], most of the Democratic establishment, has rallied behind President Biden,” Klein said.

Watch:

Klein stated that Biden now trails former President Donald Trump among independents by 9 points in a hypothetical 2024 matchup.

And while Biden led Trump among black Americans by 35 points, this was less than half of the 75 percent lead he held in the 2020 election.

“The fact of the matter is, in modern politics, that is not the kind of number that a Democrat needs to be victorious,” Klein said.

In a survey of 1,002 adults, Trump led Biden by seven points, 49 percent to 42 percent. This was just within the poll’s most extreme margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.

Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, who has not declared his candidacy for president in 2024, also led Biden by seven points, 48-to-41.

According to Klein, the similarity of those results regardless of the hypothetical Republican nominee indicated that the campaign was more about Biden’s weaknesses, perhaps most notably his age, than about his prospective opponents’ strengths.

Kelin also noted that, despite the fact that more than half of the adults polled — 56% — believed that Trump should face criminal charges related to the Jan. 6 incursion at the Capitol, he led all Republican primary challengers by double digits, including the hypothetical DeSantis.

In actuality, 18% of those polled believed that Trump should face criminal charges and would vote for him in 2024.

“That tells you a lot about Trump’s potential strengths, but maybe more than that, some of Biden’s weaknesses,” Klein said.

Some poll results indicate that the age of the candidates will be a determining factor in the 2024 election.

“Donald Trump is less than four years younger than Joe Biden, but the concerns over Biden’s age are much more significant,” Klein said. “Sixty-eight percent of voters think that Joe Biden is too old for an additional term.”

“Only 44 percent say the same about Donald Trump,” he added.

It appears that the poll did not pose the same query regarding the 44-year-old DeSantis.
