Monday, the Republican chairs of three House committees demanded testimony from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg over his rumored plans to pursue former President Donald Trump.
This week, Bragg’s office in New York plans to indict and arrest Trump, the former president announced on Saturday via social media.
Years ago, federal prosecutors declined to pursue a case against Trump for alleged “hush money” payments made to former adult film actress Stormy Daniels. On Truth Social, the former president stated that Bragg’s office still intends to criminally prosecute Trump.
According to Trump, Bragg, a prosecutor hired by George Soros, plans to go after him for alleged violations of campaign finance law that Trump has denied ever occurring.
He has also denied an affair with Daniels.
Since that Trump has been under investigation since his first year in office, 2017, this case smacks of corruption.
That reeks of intervention in a presidential race, as the former president stated on Truth Social on Sunday night.
In a letter to Bragg, three prominent Republicans expressed this sentiment.
Republican Representatives Jim Jordan of Ohio, James Comer of Kentucky, and Bryan Steil of Wisconsin sent a letter to the Manhattan district attorney demanding answers.
Jordan, Comer, and Steil are the respective chairs of the Judiciary, Oversight, and Administration committees.
The letter stated, “You are reportedly about to engage in an unprecedented abuse of prosecutorial authority: the indictment of a former President of the United States and currently declared candidate for that office.”
“This indictment comes after years of your office searching for a basis – any basis – on which to bring charges, ultimately settling on a novel legal theory untested anywhere in the country and one that federal authorities declined to pursue,” the letter added.
