Israel has been warned by the foreign minister of Iran against launching a ground conflict in Gaza.
“The war … in the Gaza Strip is not just the Zionists’ war against a group; it is a war against all Palestinians,” Hossein Amirabdollahian said, according to a Thursday report from Reuters.
“Today, the continuation of war crimes by [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu and Zionists against the civilians in Gaza — besieging, cutting off water and electricity, and denying entry of medicine and food — has created conditions where the Zionists are seeking a genocide of all people in Gaza.”
He also threatened in public that the conflict could escalate if the Hezbollah terrorist organization, which is sponsored by Iran, were to enter the fray, resulting in a “huge earthquake” that would affect Israel.
“I want to warn the war criminals and those who support this entity before it’s too late to stop the crimes against civilians in Gaza, because it might be too late in a few hours,” he said.
Similar remarks were reportedly made behind closed doors as well, as reported by Axios.
Saturday, Amirabdollahian met with United Nations envoy to the Middle East Tor Wennesland, according to unnamed sources cited by the news source.
Wennesland attempted to convince Iran to postpone any action that could escalate into a regional conflict in the Middle East.
According to reports, Amirabdollahian stated that Iran does not desire a regional conflict, but will intervene if Israel initiates a ground assault on Gaza.
Wennesland reportedly relayed that information to an Israeli national security counsel, according to Axios.
Israel stated, as reported by The Times of Israel, that it is continuing preparations to invade Gaza, a week after Hamas launched the most devastating attack in Israeli history, while Iran threatened retaliation.
The Israel Defense Forces said Saturday that they are moving forward with a “wide range of offensive operational plans,” including a “joint and coordinated attack from the air, sea and land.”
The IDF reported that Israel has mobilized hundreds of thousands of reservists and is completing the logistical preparations and arming of them.
“IDF battalions and soldiers are deployed all over the country and are prepared to increase readiness for the next stages of the war, with an emphasis on a significant ground operation,” the military added.
