Former President Donald Trump stated earlier this week that Special Counsel Jack Smith had sent him a “target” letter, suggesting that he will soon be arrested and charged with offenses related to the January 6 protest at the U.S. Capitol Building.
Smith is also critical of Trump’s handling of the sensitive documents discovered at Mar-a-Lago last year.
Trump posted on January 6 about the most recent witch hunt:
“On Sunday night, while I was with my family, having just arrived from the Turning Point event in Florida, where I won the Straw Poll against all other Republican candidates with 85.7%, with all polls showing me leading in the Republican Primary by very substantial numbers, almost everyone predicting that I will be the Republican Nominee for President, and as I am leading Democrat Joe Biden in the polls by a lot, HORRIFYING NEWS for our Country was given to me by my attorneys”
“Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and indictment.”
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) has introduced legislation to defund the current investigation by Smith in anticipation of a potential new indictment, as he is weary of the Biden Justice Department’s unusual persecution of Trump.
Robert Hur, the special counsel appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate Joe Biden’s improper handling of sensitive documents, hasn’t made much commotion since January, when he was given permission to investigate. It also coincides with Trump’s prediction on Tuesday that Smith would soon indict him in connection with the Capitol disturbance on January 6, 2021.
Only a few hours following Trump’s revelation on Truth Social, Gaetz posted on Twitter, “I will be introducing legislation to DEFUND Jack Smith’s witch hunt against President Trump.”
“They are attacking our democracy and engaging in election interference right now. The United States Congress has the capability to stop this election interference, and we must act immediately!” Gaetz declared forcefully.
In a podcast recording that was shared with his remarks, Gaetz argued that Trump would not be in such legal jeopardy if he were not ahead of Biden in an increasing number of polls.
The Republican lawmaker also criticized the Justice Department for its “lack of transparency” regarding the investigation’s actual participants, citing concerns about “the team of vicious Democrats” involved in special counsel Robert Mueller’s “Russia collusion” investigation of Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.

Trump added to his statement regarding the latest leftist persecution by the deep state:
“So now, Joe Biden’s Attorney General, Merrick Garland, who I turned down for the United States Supreme Court (in retrospect, based on his corrupt and unethical actions, a very wise decision!), together with Joe Biden’s Department of Injustice, have effectively issued a third Indictment and Arrest of Joe Biden’s NUMBER ONE POLITICAL OPPONENT, who is largely dominating him in the race for the Presidency.”
“Gaetz’s bill comes after Trump pleaded not guilty to 37 federal charges stemming from Smith’s investigation into his alleged improper retention of classified records at Mar-a-Lago last month,” Fox News reported.
