It is common for foreign actors to take advantage of a weakening administration in order to gain significant advantage. There is a growing sense in the administration of President Biden that another massive event is approaching. It has been seen with the invasion of Ukraine by the administration of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“U.S. intelligence officials are privately bracing for a massive influx of more than 170,000 migrants at the Mexico border if COVID-era policies that allow instant expulsions during the public health emergency are ended,” sources with direct knowledge of the discussions tell Axios, as reported by the news outlet.
Explaining the significance of this and why it should be a concern to Americans, Axios reported, “Border officials have used Title 42 more than 1 million times to rapidly expel migrants at the southern border without hearing asylum claims. But the Trump-era order wasn’t set up to be permanent, and senior Biden officials are preparing for its end as the virus is brought under control.”
“Department of Homeland Security intelligence estimates that perhaps 25,000 migrants already are waiting in Mexican shelters just south of the border for Title 42 to end.”
On Wednesday, DHS Deputy Secretary John Tien asked employees “to consider stepping forward to support the DHS Volunteer Force,” citing large numbers of migrants at the southwest border, according to an email seen by Axios. The email seeks general support for U.S. Customs and Border Protection and help with data entry.
Vedant Patel, White House spokesperson, told Axios, “Of course the Administration is doing our due diligence to prepare for potential changes at the border,”
“That is good government in action,” he added. “As always is the case this Administration is working every day to provide relief to immigrants, restore order, fairness, and humanity to our immigration system and bring it into the 21st century.”
As for Title 42, it has been kept in place during the Biden administration, but Democratic leaders such as Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer of the state of New York have called for its termination.
“The United States is supposed to welcome refugees with open arms, not put them in additional danger by denying them a chance to plead their case and leaving them at the mercy of criminals and smugglers,” Sen. Schumer said. “Now’s the time to stop the madness.”
Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair and California Rep. Raul Ruiz added to the call to end Title 42, saying:
“Using the pandemic as an excuse to keep implementing the Trump Title 42 policy — that has prevented millions of asylum seekers from refuge — must end.”
“The Biden Administration must end Title 42 and stop deporting Haitian migrants. Now,” Rep. Ayanna Pressley concurred.
House Progressive Caucus Chair and Washington Rep. Pramila Jayapal publicly offered her opinion on the matter when she took to Twitter with this statement: “Title 42 is cruel — period. Depriving migrants of their legal and legitimate right to seek asylum puts lives in danger. It’s time for the administration to end the use of xenophobic, Trump-era policies to expel migrants.”
However, in strong disagreement with the calls to end Title 42, Republican Rep. Jim Jordan warned of what can be expected if the administration ends it. “Democrats wants to end Title 42 at the southern border. It’s one of our last lines of defense against illegal immigration. If they nix the program now, expect immediate chaos,” he said.
Rep. Jordan’s warning is well grounded as, behind the scenes, there is sincere concern that smuggling cartels would use see the situation as an advantageous opportunity and exploit it, leading to an uncontrollable and dangerous “mass migration event.”
As reported by Fox News, on Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security sent out an email to ask for volunteers to help in protecting the Southern border.
“Once again, we need to tap into our Department’s greatest resource: the skills of our talented and diverse workforce. Today, I am asking you to consider stepping forward to support the DHS Volunteer Force,” the email said.
“[Customs and Border Protection] continues to encounter large numbers of individuals at the Southwest Border,” it said. “We are seeking your help to support our CBP frontline workforce.”
According to the report by Axios, Top Biden officials representing multiple agencies have been meeting to discuss a whole-of-government plan to deal with the potentially record-breaking spring influx of migrants. DHS has branded it the Southwest Border Mass Irregular Migration Contingency Plan.
The plan is sweeping, reflecting how serious the Biden administration believes the situation could soon become, worsening a border surge that has troubled it from the beginning.

The SBCC will physically operate out of the DHS headquarters at St. Elizabeth’s in the case of a border emergency and will be led by Border Patrol’s Matthew Hudak, according to two sources familiar with the details.
Although SBCC members have not been finalized yet, DHS is asking for senior officials to support the center from relevant agencies such as the departments of State, Justice, Defense and Health and Human Services.
Meanwhile, DHS’s modeling would trigger some extreme measures, many of which have been taken during past border surges such as in 2021 and 2019.
