Vice President Kamala Harris’s approval ratings have not been particularly high. They have never been better than those of Vice President Joe Biden. However, this is not a saving grace for Biden, as his ratings over the past few months have been dismal. Nevertheless, according to a recent survey, Kamala Harris is the least popular vice president in modern history, setting a new low.
In a survey conducted by NBC News earlier this month, only 32 percent of registered voters have a favorable opinion of the Vice President, compared to 49 percent who have a negative opinion. This left Harris with a net negative rating of -17 points, or, as reported by NBC News on Monday, June 26th, “the lowest for any vice president in the poll’s history.” This is not surprising, as 39% of respondents stated that they had a “very negative” opinion of Harris.
According to the source, Kamala Harris’s approval rating has never been lower. She broke the record established in 1995 by Vice President Al Gore, who served under President Bill Clinton. For instance, Harris’ predecessor, Vice President Mike Pence, had a rating of 34% positive and 38% negative in October 2019 during his tenure. This resulted in a -4 rating for him.
Throughout her tenure in the White House, however, Harris has faced criticism from detractors who claim she has not prioritized her position as the head of Biden’s administration’s efforts for any of the tasks she has been assigned, such as the migration challenge at the U.S.-Mexico border. Biden is in dire need of her assistance, as his initiative skills are inadequate. However, she has adapted his public speaking style of incoherent “word salads”
Despite her extremely low approval ratings, President Joe Biden has decided to retain Harris as his running companion when he declares his re-election campaign for 2024 in April. According to Axios, the White House and Biden’s campaign were continuously working to reshape Harris’ public image at the time of his announcement. They were apprehensive that she could pose a problem for the effectiveness of his ticket.
Democrats are fearful of Kamala Harris assuming the presidency if Biden, the country’s oldest president, is no longer able to serve. Biden is known for his diminishing mental and physical capabilities, and Harris has negative approval ratings.
An illustration of this growing dread occurred earlier this year, when Democrats once again piled on Harris and questioned her knowledge of fundamental politics and political skills. Throughout, they refrained from endorsing her for the presidency.
