In a contentious conversation with a CNN correspondent, Republican House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy criticized CNN, bringing out the network’s bias in reporting on former President Donald Trump and their use of former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe.
McCarthy’s comments about the allegations against former President Trump were made during a Monday appearance when he was accosted by a reporter.
The reporter inquired about McCarthy’s willingness to defend Trump, who is accused of lying to investigators, conspiring against the government, and obstructing the administration of justice, as well as the House’s response to these allegations.
McCarthy instead criticized CNN’s decision to employ former federal law enforcement officers Andrew McCabe and James Clapper. Trump frequently criticizes Clapper, a former FBI agent who is now a TV news analyst.
McCarthy told reporters present at the Capitol on Monday, “The idea of equal justice is not playing out here.” McCarthy pointed to Lauren Fox and asked, “You’re with CNN, right?”
The speaker stated, “Let’s take Andrew McCabe as an example,” but Fox interrupted him, stating, “But this is a different set of circumstances,” and McCarthy was then pressed to state whether he was willing to defend the former president.
“Are you prepared to defend your network, CNN,” McCarthy shot back. “You can’t put words in my mouth even though your network hired Andrew McCabe who was fired from the FBI for leaking classified documents.”
McCarthy responded, “You keep putting [McCabe] on to pass judgment on President Trump.” Former FBI Deputy Director McCabe was fired for leaking confidential information. After quitting the FBI, he resumed to contribute to CNN.
McCarthy retorted, “My concern as a policymaker is that when you weaponize government and now you’re weaponizing networks, that is wrong.”
McCabe, a former FBI agent who now works as a commentator for CNN, frequently criticizes Trump.
