On Sunday evening, an explosion and fire at an Archer Daniels Midland facility in Illinois injured eight employees and sent a column of smoke into the air, according to officials.

The explosion occurred soon after 7:00 p.m. at the ADM processing complex’s east facility in Decatur, Illinois. Several employees were injured and transported to hospitals, according to a statement posted on the agricultural company’s website on Sunday.

In a statement released Monday morning, Battalion Chief Wade Watson of the Decatur Fire Department said that eight ADM employees were injured and that the extent of their injuries was unknown for six of them who were transported by ambulance from the site.

According to the statement, the fire is under control and a fire personnel is still on-site monitoring hot areas. The eruption and fire’s origin is still under investigation. According to the fire department, the incident did not necessitate the evacuation of adjacent residents.

WCIA-TV posted a video of the explosion, which was followed by a large column of dark smoke soaring high into the air above the facility. The company stated that it did not know the cause of the explosion.

ADM informed The Associated Press via email on Monday morning that it had no additional information available. A company employee subsequently reported that ADM officials were preparing a revised statement to be disseminated on Monday morning.

According to the (Decatur) Herald & Review, this is the second detonation at the facility in less than a month.

Two Decatur firefighters required hospitalization on August 28 after battling a large plant fire. In that incident, personnel discovered a large fire in a processing tank that is spreading to neighboring tanks.

Decatur is located approximately 40 miles (64 kilometers) east of Springfield and approximately 180 miles (290 kilometers) southwest of ADM’s headquarters in Chicago.

It was not immediately obvious what products the facility where the explosion occurred manufactures. According to the company’s website, more than 4,000 people operate at the Decatur facility.
