Kevin McCarthy, the newly elected speaker of the House, intends to follow good on his promise to remove Democratic Representatives Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell from the influential House Intelligence Committee and Representative Ilhan Omar from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
After House Democrats removed Arizona’s Paul Gosar and Georgia’s Marjorie Taylor Greene of their committee seats in 2021, Republicans warned that they would live to regret their decision.
McCarthy told Punchbowl News, “Swalwell can’t get a security clearance in the private sector. I’m not going to give him a government security clearance.” He said, “Schiff has lied too many times to the American public. He should not be on Intel.”
McCarthy refrained from labeling the action retaliation, but in an interview with Punchbowl News on Monday, he stated, “I made all [three] cases before. It’s not like it’s anything new … Remember, this is what Nancy Pelosi, this is the type of Congress she wanted to have.”

Out: Schiff, Swalwell and Omar.
In: Gosar, Santos and MTG.
With passage of the House rules package, the next big fight for the chamber will be “populating” its committees. And that’s going to lead to a big partisan brawl on the floor. https://t.co/fPDfqh0StL— Punchbowl News (@PunchbowlNews) January 10, 2023
According to Punchbowl, McCarthy “may unilaterally prevent Schiff and Swalwell from sitting” on the House Intelligence Committee, although a House vote is necessary to remove Omar from the Foreign Affairs panel.
Typically, a minority leader provides to the speaker the names of persons they like for a certain committee. McCarthy will employ his authority to block them in this instance.
Greene was removed of her positions on the Budget and Education and Labor committees in February 2021 because to what NPR dubbed “her past incendiary comments and apparent support of violence against Democrats.” According to the story, eleven Republicans joined the Democrats in voting 230-199 to remove her from office.
According to the U.K. Daily Mail, Gosar was censured and stripped of his committee responsibilities in November 2021 after releasing a “bizarre animated movie suggesting violent crimes against progressive Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and President Joe Biden” on social media.
Since 2016, Adam Schiff’s name has nearly become synonymous with “liar.” He may be one of the least ethical House members ever to hold office. This repulsive politician maintained for three years that proof of former President Donald Trump’s collaboration with the Kremlin to win the 2016 election was “in plain sight,” despite the fact that no such evidence ever appeared. Schiff claimed a July 2019 phone call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as the grounds for Trump’s first impeachment shortly after the Mueller probe concluded in the spring of 2019. He later worked as the chief House manager for the Senate trial that resulted in the acquittal of Donald Trump.

Eric Swalwell was romantically involved with a Chinese woman in the early 2010s named Christine Fang or “Fang Fang” who turned out to be a spy. Axios broke the story in December 2020 that Swalwell had been targeted by what “U.S. officials believe was a political intelligence operation run by China’s main civilian spy agency between 2011 and 2015.” The report says she “took part in fundraising activity” for Swalwell’s 2014 campaign and even “helped place at least one intern in Swalwell’s office.” CONTINUE READING…
