Samantha Markle, the sister of Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, is suing her for defamation over Markle’s comments on an interview with Oprah Winfrey in which Markle boasted of having “essentially raised herself from virtual poverty” and claimed she had to take low-paying jobs to “make ends meet” at the age of 13.
Samantha Markle claims in her lawsuit, filed in Florida, that her younger sister started a “premeditated campaign to destroy” her and her father’s reputation, The Daily Mail reports. Samantha Markle claims that her sister attempted to damage the credibility of her and her father so “they could not interfere with or contradict the false narrative and fairy tale life story concocted by the defendant.”
The court documents state that Meghan, 40, made “false and malicious statements” in her interview with Winfrey; that Meghan Markle falsely claimed to be “an only child” and lied about when they last saw each other. It states, “The defamatory implication is that Plaintiff had no relationship whatsoever with her sister Meghan, they were virtual strangers and that Plaintiff has created a lucrative career selling false stories to tabloids and television programs when she knows nothing about Defendant’s childhood,” Page Six reports.
Samantha says the claim her sister made of being forced from the age of 13 to work at low-paying jobs in order to get by was false. “The document also lists Meghan’s claims she had no siblings, little contact with her family and that her family could only afford the $4.99 salad at Sizzlers as incorrect,” The Daily Mail adds.
The lawsuit continues, “Meghan falsely claimed that: (a) she essentially raised herself from virtual poverty; (b) she was forced from the age of 13 to work in a series of low-paying jobs to ‘make ends meet.’”
It also blasts Meghan of misleading the public regarding her father’s absence from her 2018 wedding, asserting, “Mr. Markle suffered two heart attacks in the weeks before Defendant’s wedding in May 2018 due to stress associated with the Royal wedding, the constant hounding and harassment by paparazzi and other media, and upsetting text messages he received from Defendant and Prince Harry, and Mr. Markle’s cardiologist told him he was too sick to travel to England for the wedding; Mr. Markle did not refuse to attend the wedding, but was instructed by his doctor not to attend the wedding.”
Samantha Markle also took issue with her sister’s claims to Oprah and Ellen Degeneres that she had to pay her tuition and living expenses at Northwestern University herself, claiming their father paid for the tuition and living expenses.
Meghan Markle’s attorney told TMZ: “This baseless and absurd lawsuit is just a continuation of a pattern of disturbing behavior. We will give it the minimum attention necessary, which is all it deserves.”
The lawsuit seeks $75,000 from Meghan Markle; it states, “Plaintiff has suffered actual damages in the form of lost employment, lost income from sales of her autobiography, emotional and mental distress, including anxiety and fear due to the threatening and violent emails and messages she receives regularly, and harm to her reputation and credibility.”
