‘Poetic’ Karma: Sportswriter Who Wanted NHL Player Cancelled For Rejecting Pride Jersey Gets Cancelled

The scourge of “wokeness” has seen better days, and luckily recent events have helped to turn the tide against this troubling mentality.

Despite the fact that “wokeness” is on the rise in the United States, some individuals do not appear to have received the memo. After the release of the “Twitter files” by Elon Musk, which revealed the political motivations behind the blocking of conservative voices on social media, and other revelations regarding vaccines and hidden agendas, it is evident that freedom of speech and freedom of choice are on the rise in the United States. Unfortunately, “wokeness” continues to afflict us, yet there are signs of light and hope.

Thankfully, the overabundance of “woke” criticism continues to push staff reductions at media businesses that are seeing a sharp decline in product demand amid uncertain times. Unfortunately, the awakened mentality has not fully disappeared. One athlete has lately been the target of similar persecution.

Ivan Provorov, a Russian defenceman for the Philadelphia Flyers, was criticized by the left for refusing to wear a “Pride” jersey in celebration of a certain demographic during the pre-game skate at last week’s home game against the visiting Anaheim Ducks. Provorov stated his religious convictions, which condemn the behavior of homosexuality, as his justification.

Steph Driver, previously of SB Nation’s Broad Street Hockey, was among those who called for his head to be placed on a pike. Driver continued to criticize Provorov for his faith-based stance on a matter unrelated to hockey or his playing.

“I was hoping what I heard about Provorov wasn’t true, but it has been confirmed,” Driver tweeted after the news broke of the player’s defiance. “Ivan Provorov did not participate in the Flyers pregame skate because he refused to wear the Pride jersey. In the year 2023. Provorov couldn’t have a rainbow logo touch his skin for a few minutes.” “Ivan Provorov was allowed to play in a game for the Philadelphia Flyers – the organization that was the first to say that you will be removed from the arena if you utter a homophobic slur – after refusing to wear a Pride logo for warm-ups,” she added. “What an absolute disgrace.”

However, her persecution of the dedicated athlete was met with resistance. Driver failed to recognize that no one cared what she thinks about Provorov’s religious beliefs. According to Biz Pac Review, Driver, who demanded the cancellation of NHL player Provorov, has herself been canceled in a “poetic” act of retribution.

On Friday, the intolerant writer took to Twitter to update her 12.1 K followers of the bad news that she was among those jettisoned by Vox Media which is slashing staff by 7 percent.

“Today I have been laid off. I always thought I would leave Vox and SB Nation of my own accord, but today they chose to move away from hockey coverage,” Driver wrote. “I don’t know what is next for me, I’m a little shellshocked tbh, but here we are. Steph Driver is on the market.”

The response on social media demonstrated that Twitter users did not have a great deal of compassion with Driver, whose harsh reaction to Provorov’s conviction for his passionate religious views did not endear her to them.

“Poetic,” said digital strategist Greg Price beside a sad violin emoji.

“If you’re not a Philly sports fan, a website called Broad Street Hockey full of annoying woke bloggers had their whole staff laid off by Vox today. I hope they enjoy making solar panels,” he added in another tweet.

Users who cherish freedom and justice wrote openly, evidently loving the karmic connotations of Driver’s unemployment just three days after she demanded Provorov’s dismissal.

Biz Pac Review noted:

Provorov, who cited his devout religious faith as the reason for not participating, quickly found out that when it comes to contempt for free speech and freedom of religion that Putin has nothing on the American left.

But while the likes of Driver and her fellow “woke” ilk demanded reprisals in the latest version of Orwells Two Minutes Hate, a funny thing happened as a new fan club immediately sprang up for the previously obscure Russian players with his replica jerseys selling like hotcakes.

Driver and her fellow leftist media hacks should take the time to read the message that freedom of speech and freedom of religion, which were threatened during the era of wokeness, have risen, gained strength, and are once again thriving in the United States. Those in the public sphere, particularly those in the media, must take stock. For more fruitful careers, journalists should likely reinvent themselves as journalists and familiarize themselves with the United States Constitution.
