Steve Harwell, the former lead singer of Smash Mouth, passed away on Monday morning, a day after it was reported that he had been placed under hospice care.
CNN reported that the 56-year-old died at his residence in Boise, Idaho, surrounded by his family and colleagues.
TMZ reported on Sunday evening that Harwell was placed in hospice care after receiving alcohol abuse treatment.
Several hours later, he died.
According to the reports, Harwell suffered from end-stage hepatic failure, and nothing could be done to assist him.
According to TMZ, the singer struggled with alcoholism throughout his entire existence.
Monday, Smash Mouth manager Robert Hayes issued a statement to CNN regarding Harwell’s passing.
“Steve Harwell was a true American Original. A larger than life character who shot up into the sky like a Roman candle,” he said.
“Steve should be remembered for his unwavering focus and impassioned determination to reach the heights of pop stardom,” Hayes added. And the fact that he accomplished this near-impossible feat with minimal musical training makes his achievements all the more remarkable.
“His only tools were his irrepressible charm and charisma, his fearlessly reckless ambition, and his king-size cajones.”
