The federal grand jury investigating the January 6 assault on the Capitol has subpoenaed Steve Bannon.

According to two individuals with knowledge of the situation, the subpoena for documents and testimony was issued in late May, as reported by NBC News.

Bannon, age 69, was the president’s principal strategist for the first seven months of Donald Trump’s presidency. He co-founded Breitbart News as well. He presently hosts a podcast and is one of the most recognizable figures in the MAGA community.

In July 2022, Bannon was found to be in defiance of Congress for refusing to comply with an order to testify before a committee investigating the attack on the Capitol.

He has lodged an appeal against the verdict, and he has not yet been sentenced.

On May 27, 2024, Bannon is scheduled to stand trial on criminal accusations related to an attempt to finance Trump’s border wall along the southern United States.

Bannon was very vocal about his desire for President Trump to deny the results of the 2020 November election, and he demanded that patriots challenge the announcement.

On January 5, 2021, he announced on his podcast that “all hell is going to break loose tomorrow.”

According to Bob Woodward and Robert Costa’s book Peril, Steve Bannon advised Donald Trump in December 2020 to focus all of his efforts on January 6.

The authors also claimed that Trump contacted Bannon after a contentious meeting with then-Vice President Mike Pence on January 5. During this conversation, Pence reportedly informed Trump that he lacked the authority to delay the certification of the 2020 election results.

In October, a jury convicted Bannon of criminal contempt of Congress for disobeying a subpoena issued by a House committee investigating the incident in the Capitol. Bannon was sentenced to four months in prison. The subpoena was issued by the committee conducting the investigation into the violence. The judge has, however, postponed Bannon’s sentencing because he is appealing his conviction.

Trump has denied multiple allegations of misconduct.

The former president argued that executive privilege protects his interactions and communications with former White House employees while in office. However, his efforts to shield former White House staffers from subpoenas issued by the special counsel were unsuccessful. According to CBS News, a judge dismissed the majority of these claims earlier this year and instructed the parties involved to testify.

Jack Smith, who was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland as special counsel in November, is presently conducting an investigation into the events of January 6.

Additionally, Smith is investigating how Trump handled classified information.

Mark Meadows, who formerly served as Trump’s chief of staff, was revealed to have testified before Smith’s team on Monday; however, it remained unclear whether he discussed the confidential materials, January 6, or both during his testimony.
