Governor Greg Abbott recently vowed to start bussing migrants to Washington, D.C., to combat the lax immigration policies of President Joe Biden.
“Abbott announced last week that he was directing the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to transport migrants released from federal custody in Texas to the nation’s capital and other locations outside his state,” according to Fox News.
“The bus pulled up at approximately 8 a.m. local time, blocks away from the U.S. Capitol building. Individuals disembarked one by one except for family units who exited together. They checked in with officials and had wristbands they were wearing cut off before being told they could go,” the report stated.
“According to TDEM, Abbott’s plan is already working. The agency told Fox News on Monday that many of the communities that originally reached out for support – from the Rio Grande Valley to Terrell County – say the federal government stopped dropping immigrants in their towns since Abbott’s announcement on April 6.”
In the beginning, the White House dismissed Abbott’s plan as a publicity stunt, but now they understand his seriousness.
“I’m not aware of what authority the governor would be doing that under,” Jen Psaki, White House press secretary, said. “I think it’s pretty clear this is a publicity stunt. His own office admits that a migrant would need to voluntarily be transported, and he can’t compel them to because, again, enforcement of our country’s immigration laws lies with the federal government, not a state.”
During a news conference on Wednesday, Psaki criticized Abbott’s immigration policies, stating his “unnecessary and redundant inspections of trucks transiting ports of entry between Texas and Mexico are causing significant disruptions to the food and automobile supply chains, delaying manufacturing, impacting jobs, and raising prices for families in Texas and across the country.”
“Local businesses and trade associations are calling on Governor Abbott to reverse this decision because trucks are facing lengthy delays exceeding 5 hours at some border crossings and commercial traffic has dropped by as much as 60 percent,” Psaki continued. “The continuous flow of legitimate trade and travel and CBP’s ability to do its job should not be obstructed. Governor Abbott’s actions are impacting people’s jobs, and the livelihoods of hardworking American families.”
“TDEM said it dispatched buses over the weekend to border communities where it coordinated with officials to identify these immigrants. The agency added that each bus has the capacity and supplies necessary to carry up to 40 migrants released in Texas communities and transport them to Washington, D.C.,” the Fox News report continued.
On Wednesday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced that his state will bus migrants who enter the country illegally to Washington, D.C.
During a press conference, the governor announced the busing pledge was just one of several enforcement measures his administration hopes to take at the state level ahead of an expected flood of migrants following last week’s announcement by the Biden White House that Title 42 was ending.
The order was implemented by the Trump administration under a law known as Title 42.
As a means of slowing COVID-19’s spread, it authorized border and immigration agents to deport illegals immediately.
CDC director Rochelle Walensky has announced that the rule will expire on May 23, the day it was first enacted.
As a result, Abbott announced that the state would charter private buses to transport migrants to the nation’s capital.
“With the Biden administration ending Title 42 expulsions in May, Texas will be taking its own unprecedented actions this month to do what no state in America has ever done in the history of this country to better secure our state, as well as our nation,” Governor Abbott said during a press conference.

“To help local officials whose communities are being overwhelmed with hordes of illegal immigrants who are being dropped off by the Biden administration, Texas is providing charter buses to send these illegal immigrants who have been dropped off by the Biden administration to Washington, D.C.,” Abbott continued. “We are sending them to the United States capital where the Biden administration will be able to more immediately address the needs of the people that they are allowing to come across our border.”
Governor Abbott released a statement regarding the situation, saying, “Texans demand and deserve an aggressive, comprehensive strategy to secure our border—not President Biden’s lackluster leadership. As the federal government continues to roll back commonsense policies that once kept our communities safe, our local law enforcement has stepped up to protect Texans from dangerous criminals, deadly drugs, and illegal contraband flooding into the Lone Star State.”
A few of the measures Abbott is taking to stem the flow of illegal aliens into Texas and the country are:
- Taking aggressive action to secure the border as President Biden ends Title 42 expulsions, including enhancing vehicle inspections, busing unlawful migrants to Washington, D.C., and creating boat blockades along the Rio Grande River
- Launching Operation Lone Star and deploying thousands of National Guard soldiers and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers
