Monica Mendez of Port Lavaca pleaded guilty to 26 felony charges, including three counts of illegal voting, seven counts of assisting a voter to submit a ballot by mail, eight counts of unlawful possession of a mail ballot, and eight counts of election fraud, according to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

According to the Victoria (Texas) Advocate, the charges originated from a 2018 water board election in the small community of Bloomington, some 130 miles south of Houston.

When Victoria County elections officials discovered the state was examining Mendez’s volunteer activities, they banned her from continuing to serve as a volunteer deputy registrar.

Margetta Hill, administrator of elections for Victoria County, stated, revoke her certificate,”

She continued, “We didn’t renew it,”

However, the 37-year-old will not serve any prison time. She was sentenced to $1,415 in fines, 80 hours of community service, and five years of deferred adjudication probation by District Judge Eli Garza.

The case was prosecuted jointly by Paxton’s Election Integrity section and the Victoria County District Attorney’s Office.

Texas is not generally thought to be competitive in national elections, but Democrats in 2020 poured resources into the state in hopes of flipping several House seats in the state.

The reverse may be true in 2022.
