Thirteen Students Reported Dead in Boarding School Dorm Blaze

Published on

13 students perished in the conflagration that broke out in the dormitories of an elementary residential school in the central province of Henan, according to information released by Chinese state media on Saturday.

A third-grade pupil was among those who perished, according to a teacher who spoke to Zonglan news, a state-run media outlet from Hebei province.

One of those evacuated from the incident was reportedly receiving treatment in the hospital, as reported by CCTV, the state broadcaster of China.

According to a Xinhua news report, police cordoned off the school, and the dormitory where the fire broke out was completely engulfed in flames, right down to the exterior of the structure. The windows of the school were adorned with metal grilles, a design characteristic commonly observed in Chinese architecture.

Xinhua reports that the dormitory room accommodated around thirty students. The remaining sixteen pupils were evacuated successfully.

The fire broke out just before midnight on Friday night at Yingcai School in the rural Fangcheng district of central Henan. The proprietor of the school was detained, according to CCTV footage.

The ownership of the school, according to public records cited by state media, is held by an individual named Li Jizhong. It was impossible for the Associated Press to contact Li.

According to local authorities, an investigation into the fire’s cause was underway. A team was also dispatched to the site by the central Emergency Management Ministry of China to conduct an investigation.

In China, fire safety continues to be a primary concern.

An April fire in a Beijing hospital resulted in the tragic loss of 29 lives. As seen in videos circulating on social media, patients who were confined in the multi-story building evidently tied bed linens into makeshift ropes and escaped by climbing out windows.

The Henan boarding school predominantly serves students in the elementary grades; however, it does have an affiliated kindergarten, as stated on the institution’s WeChat page.

A significant number of residential pupils are from rural regions, according to the Beijing Youth Daily.

The establishment is situated in Dushu municipality and functions as one of the two branches of the educational institution.
