The Trump campaign harshly criticized Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and other prosecutors who are currently investigating former President Trump. This comes at a time when allegations in Georgia regarding efforts to alter the state’s 2020 election results appear imminent.
The Trump campaign released a statement, which was not attributed to a specific spokesperson, criticizing Willis as a “rabid partisan” who is “campaigning and fundraising on a platform of prosecuting President Trump through these bogus indictments,” according to The Hill.
“Ripping a page from Crooked Joe Biden’s playbook, Willis has strategically stalled her investigation to try and maximally interfere with the 2024 presidential race and damage the dominant Trump campaign. All of these corrupt Democrat attempts will fail,” the campaign said in a statement.
The campaign repeated a frequently stated claim that prosecutors had the opportunity to file charges against Trump shortly after he left office two and a half years ago. This argument persists despite the fact that Willis and her colleagues have spent several months investigating the former president’s efforts to invalidate the results of the 2020 election.
The ex-president and his supporters have leveled charges against Willis and other individuals, alleging their involvement in “election interference” in an effort to thwart his 2024 presidential campaign. Notably, the former president currently holds a substantial advantage in Republican primary surveys.
“These activities by Democrat leaders constitute a grave threat to American democracy and are direct attempts to deprive the American people of their rightful choice to cast their vote for President,” the campaign statement said. “Call it election interference or election manipulation—it is a dangerous effort by the ruling class to suppress the choice of the people. It is un-American and wrong.”
Trump’s campaign asserted that he is entitled to exercise his right to free speech by alleging that the 2020 election was rigged, while expressing unwavering confidence that he will stick to his claims.
The aforementioned declaration was issued immediately following the grand jury’s issuance of an indictment related to the investigation into efforts to undermine the outcome of Georgia’s 2020 election, in which Biden defeated Trump by approximately 11,000 votes.
The specifics of the indictment were not immediately apparent, but it was expected that they would be disclosed on Monday evening.
Willis has been conducting an investigation into the pressure campaign instigated by Trump against elected officials, as well as a plan to identify alternative electors who would vow their support to Trump, despite the fact that multiple recounts have officially certified Biden’s victory in the state.
