According to a new report, the landscape of conservative media could be irreversibly altered.
Tucker Carlson, according to Axios, has stopped playing defense and is preparing to exert genuine pressure on Fox News to release him from his contract.
Since Carlson’s abrupt dismissal from the suddenly struggling news network, rumors have circulated that Fox News will use contractual obligations to keep Carlson employed through the 2024 elections. Axios reported that Fox News would pay Carlson $20 million per year to not work for the remainder of his contract, which expires in January 2025.
Given Carlson’s fiery personality, it’s not surprising that neither he nor his legal counsel are pleased with the prospect of being forced to the margins.
“The idea that anyone is going to silence Tucker and prevent him from speaking to his audience is beyond preposterous,” Bryan Freedman, Carlson’s lawyer, told Axios.
In fact, according to Axios, Carlson is “preparing to unleash allies to attack Fox News” in an effort to coerce them into releasing him from his current contract.
Fox News competitors have already reportedly offered Carlson a substantial salary to work for them if/when his attack campaign against Fox News is successful.
There are also rumors that Carlson would like to moderate an independent GOP presidential debate, possibly featuring former president Donald Trump as the main speaker.
Axios noted, however, that Carlson’s ambitions may extend far beyond moderating a debate or working for another conservative news organization.
Carlson is rumored to want to “start” his own “right-wing rival” to Fox News, which may take the form of a “direct-to-consumer” platform where his most ardent followers can pay him directly for his content.
Axios also reports that Carlson has had “a conversation” with Twitter CEO Elon Musk about “working together,” but nothing even remotely concrete has yet materialized.
An intriguing aspect of this new report is that, perhaps as a countermeasure to the rumored “oppo file” of dirt on Tucker Carlson that Fox News possesses, the former network anchor also has dirt on his former employers.
