Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declared on Friday that she will run for re-election to the House of Representatives for a 20th term in 2024.
The announcement was made by the California Democrat via a post on the X social media platform.
Pelosi, 83 years old, served as speaker of the House for a total of eight years and as leader of the House Democratic Caucus for a total of twenty years, from 2003 to 2023.
After stepping down from leadership at the conclusion of the 117th Congress, she has continued to represent San Francisco in the House.
“Now more than ever our City needs us to advance San Francisco values and further our recovery,” the congresswoman said in the post Friday. “Our country needs America to show the world that our flag is still there, with liberty and justice for ALL.
“That is why I am running for reelection — and respectfully ask for your vote.”

Since 1987, Pelosi has represented the San Francisco area in the 11th Congressional District of California.
Following an assault on her husband, Paul Pelosi, in their San Francisco residence, she resigned from the Democratic leadership of the House.
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, who represents the borough of Brooklyn in New York City, succeeded Pelosi as the Democratic leader.
From 2019 to 2023, during her second tenure as speaker, she presided over the chamber that twice impeached President Donald Trump.
Trump was vindicated both times following Senate trials.
