At a significant US-Mexico border crossing, intense gunfire has erupted, and local reports indicate multiple fatalities.
The incident began around 3 p.m. local time on the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge.
According to the Mexican news outlet Adn40, “apparently the confrontation occurred between elements of the army and armed civilians; the preliminary balance is three alleged criminals killed.”
A bridge traverses the Rio Grande and connects the cities of Pharr in Texas, United States, and Reynosa in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas.
A second video depicts two individuals hiding by the side of a vehicle as shots sound out over a road that appears to be vacant.
A witness noted next to a photo of a shredded projectile that bullets were ricocheting off the Reynosa-Pharr customs building.
The notorious gangs that control the movement of illegal narcotics into the United States engage in fierce competition for control of Mexico’s border regions.
Video captured from within one of the bridge trucks reveals what appear to be Mexican military vehicles speeding past terrified commuters.
According to local reports, violence erupted after authorities allegedly apprehended ‘La Pawa,’ the regional chief of the criminal organization Los Zetas.
